A wonderful "Historical" work about my hometown.
As a child growing up I had little appreciation for what a historical place I lived in. As an adult I am ashamed of what I squandered in my youth. In addition to my classmates and family members,I urge all History Students to read this book.

A "must have" for anyone who loves Kittery Maine!
This book of photos of people, places, and familiar sites around Kittery is a definite must for anyone who has lived in Kittery. The pictures are worth MORE than a thousand words. Imagine my delight to find my own grandfather's and great-grandfather's photogragh from the 1940's!

25 Bicycle Tours in Maine: Coastal and Inland Rides from Kittery to Caribou
Published in Paperback by Countryman Pr (May, 1990)
Author: Howard Stone
Average review score:

Another excellent book from Howard Stone
I have enjoyed Howard Stone's bike books for Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and as a new resident of Maine am delighted to have an opportunity to enjoy his rides in my new state. As always, Howard's ride descriptions and directions are very thorough and accurate. I especially appreciate the consistency with which he rates the difficulty of the rides. As an avid, but strictly recreational, cyclist, I found this to be an excellent book.

stackpole isn't perfect
This book is available from Picton Press currently as areprint. It is inaccurate and imperfect but the only record of somefamily relationships that is left, especially because Kittery Poor House inmates burnt vital records one cold winter when the town forgot to gave them wood to heat the place....

Kayaking the Maine Coast: A Paddler's Guide to Day Trips from Kittery to Cobscook
Published in Paperback by Countryman Pr (June, 2000)
Authors: Dorcas Miller, Ruth Hill, and Phyllis Evenden
Average review score:

Useful but lacking
Good information but very general and lacks any useful detail. One can get a lot of this information on line or from the locals.

Best kayaking guidebook I've ever read!
I've been sea kayaking for 16 years, all of them on the coast of Maine, as well as many other places around the globe. . .and I've read LOTS of sea kayaking guidebooks. . .and this is by far the BEST I've ever read!

I thought that I already "knew" the coast of Maine really well. . .but reading Dorcas' book, I realize there is lots to learn and lots more coast to explore.

Not only has Dorcas done a superb job at gathering a huge amount of information useful for kayakers, she has presented it in a very kayaker- and reader-friendly way. I really appreciate that it isn't a book of "suggested trips," but rather a book with thorough info about launching spots, safety considerations, places of interest, and useful local knowledge. Her focus on natural and cultural history information also helps me figure out places I want to explore.

Have I used the book? Yes, this past weekend I went paddling near Kittery and the book was helpful for figuring out launching spots and weather/tide concerns to watch out for. And when we found a baby seal "stranded" on the beach, I knew that there was a phone number in Dorcas' book that we could call to report the "stranding" and help out the seal. We called, the seal was fine.

And relaxing after the paddle, I started thumbing through the book to figure out the next stretch of coast I wanted to explore.

This is definitely a must-have book for any sea kayaker planning a trip to Maine!

Kayaking in the northeast
Kayaking in the Northeast has just gotten easier and NE kayakers much better informed thanks to the release of D. Miller's book. This book lives up to its title in every way. The book is well written, detailed enough to provide confidence and an opportunity to plan well for a paddle adventure. The information in this book will save those less familiar with the coast of Maine many frustrating mistakes and bad trips, and for those more familiar with Maine some new ideas on what to do and see. In addition there are informative chapters all who use the coast of Maine for recreation should know and follow. For those of us beginning to explore the coast of Maine by kayak this is an essential addition our bookshelf.

A handbook for cruising the Maine coast
This is one of a pair of books by Johnson which gives detailed information for cruising the coast of Maine. The companion book is Cruising Guide to Maine Vol II Rockport to Eastport. The books provide an excellent set of discriptions of the various ports and thier attractions including restaruants, marine supplies, fuel water etc. The books are loaded with charts that show prefered routes into tricky harbors with rocks and other obstructions clearly identified. A must for the cruising sailor who wants to explore the mysteries and splendor of the Maine coast.

Kittery to Calais: The Maine Coast from Above
Published in Hardcover by Down East Books (June, 2000)
Authors: Charles Feil and Jeff Clark
Average review score:

A great photo illustration of the Maine Coastline
Highly recommended if you're a photo buff like mylelf, or if you are into pictures of the Maine coastline. Would make an especially nice gift as a coffee table book. Not much narrative, but there are 112 pages of beautiful pictures, with a little explanation about each one. The photos were taken by Charles Feil from an ultralite airplane, and encompass all 4 seasons; really illustrating the ruggedness of the land.
